Proof That Boca Grande Is the Tarpon Capital Of The World

Boca Grande, Florida = Tarpon Insanity.

This video made…my…day.

It’s the fishing version of “You Never Even Called Me by My Name” (aka The Perfect Country Western Song). Instead of featuring mama, trains, trucks, prison, and drinking, it features: emerald green waters as far as the eye can see; tons of gratuitous airborne tarpon shots; a man in swim trunks chasing a tarpon through the shallows; another man diving on top of a school of shad with a net; and a very, very happy golden retriever.

For those of you not in the know, Boca Grande is a charming little community on Florida’s Gasparilla Island that has been a home-away-from-home for presidents, movie stars, and other high-profile individuals for the past hundred years. It is also considered the “tarpon fishing capital of the world.” According to Wikipedia, over 5,000 tarpon are caught during each 80 day annual season.

That’s a fish caught every 23 minutes.

For those of you planning this summer’s family vacation, you could theoretically catch two tarpon in the time it takes to wait once through the line for “It’s a Small World.”

Just throwing that out there for you…
