Bora Bora is truly one of the most beautiful islands in the world and sits atop many people’s travel bucket list. The turquoise lagoon and surrounding atoll with the mystical Mt. Otemanu looming in the background are something out of a South Pacific fantasy. While Bora Bora is most known as a romantic honeymoon destination, you may not be surprised to hear that there is some great fishing to be found in the cobalt blue waters just beyond the lagoon.

Bora Bora Fishing Charters is the best local option for charter fishing, and Captain Tama and his expert mate Anapa grew up fishing in Bora Bora. Their boat is the 27′ Boston Whaler Kaivea, named after the owner’s son and is a word meaning “where the ocean swells of Hawaii and Tahiti meet”. The boat is the perfect size for comfort and fishability, and the crew encourages its guests to be actively involved in setting lines, hooking and landing fish. The boat is well outfitted with Shimano tackle, with Tiagra 130s being standard for trolling, and for stand up fishing, lighter Shimano 50s/80s and Stella spinning rigs.

A typical day includes a very short run to the deep water, where both live bait and trolled lures are employed. Blue Marlin are the prize, but the team also commonly catches mahi mahi, wahoo and tuna. When trolling isn’t producing, the crew often employs a local technique of dropping baits down deep for yellow fin tuna, a method that many visitors enjoy learning.
