Blue Reef Fishing Lodge is a bit out of the way for most anglers – it is located on the idyllic tropical island of Zanzibar off the coast of East Africa. However, this Indian Ocean paradise is the perfect opportunity to truly leave your cares behind while experiencing an exciting, untapped fishery.

Blue Reef was founded by three Dutch friends – Thomas Boer, Nicky Boontje and Nathan Boer – who gave up their busy lives in Holland to establish the lodge after a visit to Zanzibar in 2012. After recognizing the lack of facilities and sport fishing operations, the trio parlayed their shared passion for fishing, and the warm appeal of Zanzibar’s people and laid back culture, into a new island home with unlimited fishing potential.

The warm and intimate facilities at Blue Reef Fishing Lodge include a restaurant overlooking the Indian Ocean and a beach bar, which often hosts beach barbeques with live local music. The friendly staff can help with not only fishing excursions but also mountain bike rental, spa services and transfers and local transportation. But if you’re lucky enough to visit, you may want to simply take advantage of the hammocks in their shady tropical garden…when you’re not fishing that is.

The fishing is outstanding but largely untapped. The easily accessible blue water teems with the usual pelagic suspects including wahoo, marlin, tuna and dorado. Inshore, Giant Trevallys and a variety of bottom fish are always available. The fishing is great year round, but the best time for marlin and tuna is November through March.
