Amazing Drone Footage of Humpback Whales on a Feeding Frenzy
Watch these whales perform a majestic and coordinated ballet.
The humpback whale is one of earth’s most majestic creatures and seeing one in person is a privilege not all of us are fortunate to experience. This beautiful video out of Alaska captures roughly FIFTEEN humpback whales schooling around.
The second half of the short video is especially unique in that it shows the whales working in unison to feed on a some fish.
The technique is called bubble net feeding and is particularly used by the humpback whale where a group of the whales will circle and blow bubbles below an unsuspecting school of fish all while making their circle closer and closer. The ever shrinking circumference of bubbles engulfs the then helpless bait fish which forces them upward towards the top of the water column. Using this technique, the whales can catch thousands, if not more, bait fish in one pass.
The video footage which was taken by a drone does offer a true “bird’s eye” view of the whales working together for their meal. This feeding is breathtaking to watch and with the pristine Alaska backdrop makes for an even more compelling must watch video.
