Ascension Bay in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is considered by many to be one of North America’s top spots to fly fish for the “Grand Slam” of saltwater fly fishing – permit, tarpon, bonefish and snook. Punta Allen Fishing Club is an exclusive lodge perfectly located in the heart of Ascension Bay that offers warm hospitality and outstanding fishing.

Ascension Bay is a 400 sq. mile paradise within the Sian Ka’an reserve, designated by UNESCO as a world heritage site. Punta Allen is a small fishing town in the middle of this with access to endless flats, lagoons and reefs holding hungry gamefish. One of the bests things about the area is the variety – both in terms of species and fishing scenarios. The area is particularly known for permit, but bonefish, snook and tarpon are targeted as well. The fishing is consistent all year, although the giant migrating tarpon (100-200 lbs) are concentrated in July/August.

Punta Allen Fishing Club uses 23′-25′ pangas that are specially outfitted for flats fishing and are very stable in the shallow water. A typical day starts with a hearty breakfast at 7am, fishing from 8am-4pm, and a relaxing afternoon telling fishing stories at the lodge. The best fishing spots are only a 10-minute ride from the lodge.

The lodge was built in 2009 using local indigenous hardwoods and Mexican stucco, and the “eco-friendly” lodge has 5 guest rooms. Upstairs under a traditional Mayan palapa you will find the dining room, fly tying stations, lounge, and a bar. Only 50 yards away you can take an afternoon stroll on the beautiful beach of Punta Allen. With only a 2 hour flight from Houston or Miami, this is a great destination to get your personal inshore “grand slam”!
