On the Pacific coast of Guatemala, where dramatic underwater topography and rich ocean currents create an environment where billfish swirl in astonishing numbers, Pacific Fins Resort has quietly become one of the most revered sportfishing destinations on the planet. This boutique fishing lodge is the ultimate base for anglers chasing the sailfish that have earned these waters the reputation as the best in the world for pure numbers and quality of billfish.
What sets the fishing apart is the sheer volume of opportunity. On a typical day, anglers may see 15 to 20 sailfish bites, and during the peak season (October - June) 40+ bites in a single day is not uncommon. Top boats release more than 2,000 sailfish a year, and in March 2006 the daily release record was set with an astonishing 126 sailfish released! Speaking from personal experience, your humble scribe will say that not only is this incredible to witness, but it also gives you a rare opportunity to hone your skills on bait and switch, hooking billfish, and enjoying the battle…what normally would take a lifetime (landing dozens of billfish) can be accomplished in a few days of fishing with Pacific Fins.
It is also notable that these are big, Pacific Sailfish - with an average size of 90-100 lbs and bigger specimens being common. While sails are the headline, blue, striped, and black marlin also roam these waters, with blue marlin in the 300–600-pound class encountered regularly and multiple marlin raised in a day not unheard of. Yellowfin tuna and mahi mahi are also present in big numbers and add to the delicious cuisine prepared by the Pacific Fins chefs.
The resort itself strikes a rare balance: it feels intimate and welcoming, yet offers the luxurious comforts anglers appreciate after long days offshore. Private villas and suites overlook the marina, and an attentive staff ensures meals, beverages, and downtime are almost as enjoyable as the fishing. Many guests return year after year not just for the angling, but for the relaxed camaraderie fostered during evening cocktail hour and the excitement of morning departures.
If you’re looking for billfish - particularly sailfish in numbers - you won’t find a better location. It is only a 3-4 hour non-stop flight from many locations in the US, and many trips include a stop in Guatemala’s beautiful town of Antigua with its surrounding volcanos and natural beauty. Pacific Fins offers not only a chance to fish with some of the best captains in the area, but also enjoy a welcoming but luxurious stay at this beautiful resort.
