Along Australia’s east coast, where the Great Barrier Reef meets the deep waters of the Coral Sea, Calypso Fishing Adventures has earned a reputation as a serious player in the world of big game fishing. Operating between iconic destinations like Cairns and Port Stephens, this charter is closely tied to one of the most legendary fisheries on the planet, particularly when it comes to giant black marlin.
Captain Tim Dean brings more than 25 years of experience to the helm and is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most respected game fishing captains. His knowledge of marlin behavior and offshore conditions is evident in the way he approaches each day, and Tim has built a loyal following among anglers pursuing giant marlin. His trusty steed is Calypso, a 47-foot O’Brien sportfisher purpose-built for blue water performance. Known for its durability and fishability, the vessel is designed for the demands of targeting large pelagic species.
Fishing here is built around scale and seasonality. During the peak months of September through December, the waters off northern Queensland become the global stage for black marlin, including the chance at true grander-class fish. This means heavy tackle trolling along the Ribbon Reefs, a chain of narrow, breaking reefs that run ribbon-like along the coastline, with steep drop-offs and current lines which create ideal black marlin feeding grounds. Most trips include overnight stays, so by night vessels anchor on the protected lee side of the reef. This opens up opportunities for jigging for dogtooth tuna and coral trout or throwing poppers for giant trevally….and also means that in the morning you are just minutes from the marlin grounds.
During the late spring and summer months when the black marlin migrate south, Captain Dean focuses his efforts on charters out of Port Stephens. In addition to black marlin, this renowned area is a prime location for a Grand Slam, with blue marlin and striped marlin also being frequent encounters.
For anglers drawn to the pursuit of marlin in one of the world’s most storied fisheries, a day aboard Calypso is a front-row seat to the power, scale, and raw excitement that define Australia’s offshore waters.
