Giant Goliath Grouper Attacks Diver While Spearfishing

That’s going to leave a mark.

I remember talking to a charter-boat captain who mentioned that he never went swimming in the gulf. Intrigued and knowing that he was a capable swimmer, I asked him what his rationale was.

“I like being at the top of the food chain,” he said. “Once you jump off that boat, the lines begin to get mighty blurry.”

I think this might have been what he was talking about.

First of all, the impressively large grouper seen trying to gobble down the diver’s arm is not engaging in predatory behavior; at least, not towards the man. It is, however, intensely interested in the freshly-speared snapper in his hand.  Having received a couple of grouper bites in the past, it’s pretty hard to watch the guy’s hand disappear into that toothy mouth without cringing. Fortunately, with the exception of the snapper, everybody swam away from the encounter without any serious injuries.
